‘This is what happens when the government goes against me’: Christian leader on government shutdown
NEW YORK — A group of Christian leaders has demanded that the government shutdown be called off and the government be reopened.
The group, called The United Nations of Congregations for the Protection of Children, says the shutdown was created by the federal government to “impose its own will” and to “make us feel powerless.”
“The shutdown has already harmed millions of children,” the group wrote on its website.
“Children are in danger.
We have lost faith in our government.”
The U.N. group says the federal shutdown is part of an effort by the Obama administration to “tramble the constitution.”
Its letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the latest sign that the GOP-led Congress has a problem with the country’s growing faith in government.
Its call to shut down the government comes as Republicans in the House and Senate are considering legislation that would temporarily lift the federal spending caps that have been in place since President Donald Trump took office in January.
President Donald Trump and his top aides have repeatedly said that the shutdown is a necessary response to the opioid crisis and the “tough-on-crime” policies of former President Barack Obama.
